PRESS RELEASE
THE NIGHT BRIGHTENS • AN EXHIBITION BY MARTY SCHNAPF • JANUARY 9TH – MARCH 5th, 2016
Museum as Retail Space (MaRS) is pleased to present The Night Brightens, a solo exhibition by Marty Schnapf. This exhibition features bronze sculptures, oil paintings and drawings.
A cursory read of Schnapf’s works might lead one to see them as portents of eschatological cataclysm. In actuality they operate in a modality of synchronicity - a receptivity to the semiotic emergence of coincident events and atemporal perspectives.
‘Time’ and ‘Presence’ wrestle in orgiastic confrontation, rather than reference social or narrative particulars. Geometric manifestations, Vitruvian figures, and amalgamations of orifice, phallus, and carapace perform in an orchestration of apocalypse and genesis.
Circumventing societal references, the work reveals meta-societal subjects. The viewer is left in a position of parallax - asked to accept the proposition of synchronistic events against a praxis concerned with immortal forms.
